Zócalo
The Zócalo — officially known as Plaza de la Constitución — is one of the largest public squares in Latin America and the world, located in the historic center of Mexico City. In 1987, it was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
As part of the most recent renovation, a time capsule was buried at the heart of the square. I was commissioned to create a piece of handmade calligraphy for a letter placed inside the capsule, intended to be discovered by future generations.
The letter spoke about our identity as a people — how we live, what defines us as a culture, and our hope that those who one day find it will be our own descendants. It was written using a flexible metal nib and black ink on special anti-fungal, humidity-resistant paper provided by the client to ensure its preservation over time.
This project holds deep personal meaning for me. As a calligraphy artist and a native of Mexico City, having a piece of my work buried in the very core of the city that raised me — the city that gave me everything — is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.
